Up until the 2012-2013 NHL season, the Carolina Hurricanes played in the Southeast division where they made rivals with the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers. Why are they called Carolina Hurricanes?
Prior to moving to Carolina in 1997, the Carolina Hurricanes were known as the Hartford Whalers. Once relocated, ownership took it upon themselves to select the name ‘Hurricanes’ due to the fact that the eastern part of North Carolina is often subject to tropical storms. Since the team would be sharing the arena and facilities with the school, the decision was made to stick to the North Carolina State colour scheme of red and black.
